Only 11% of Airline Employees in India have real-time access to Business Critical Information

Global Survey done with airline operations managers in 10 countries including India suggests that most airlines have very limited knowledge of critical information in real-time

Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS), a leading software provider that enables enterprises to be operationally responsive, today announced some startling results of global research carried out by Vanson Bourne, one of the leading research firms based in UK. The survey, which was carried with airline operation managers in 10 countries including India suggests that just around 1/10th or only 11 percent of key airline staff have access to data in real-time for key performance indicators (KPIs) such as baggage rates, missed connections and cancelled flights.

The survey, carried out across 81 airline operations managers from 10 different countries, also stated that only 15 percent of respondents claim to always have the right level of visibility into the information required to make decisions on time.

Again, surprisingly, 88 percent of the survey respondents said that their airline does not change operational models on-the-fly, leaving them without the capabilities to react to unexpected events. Despite this, nearly 90 percent of respondents did confirm that it is important to respond in real-time to events. However, 85 percent stated that the amount of available information that goes into making decisions is increasing.

The research also found that nearly three quarters of airlines are actively investing in technology to prepare for the upturn in the economy.

The survey was wide-reaching, covering the following countries: Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, India, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, UK and the USA.

According to Kaushal Mashruwala, Vice President, Progress Software India: “There is growing pressure on airlines today, which means that they must now seek enhanced visibility in an increasingly dynamic and challenging environment. They also need to become much more active and responsive in the way their operations meet customer demands.  This approach is the only way they will survive and adapt to new business opportunities.”

Kaushal added: “If we take a look at the bright side, majority of the airline industry is waking up to the importance of plugging key decision makers into a unified and interactive environment to view their operations.  This gives them the ability to respond in real time to unexpected situations and improve their business. Business responsiveness means decision makers must have access to the right information at the right time to make the best decisions and reduce risk, whilst boosting efficiency and income. Airlines can now look towards responsive process management technology that enables them to sense and respond to events in real-time. This means that they can analyze what is happening instead of what has already happened.”
