UK airlines cancel flights to Tokyo

UK airlines have cancelled flights to Tokyo following an earthquake which ripped across Japan, bringing devastation to a wide area and prompting fears of a massive death toll.

The 8.9-magnitude quake unleashed a 13ft tsunami that swept boats, cars, buildings and tons of debris miles inland, and warnings were issued to all countries with Pacific coastlines to be ready for it to hit them.

A British Airways plane heading for Tokyo's Hareda airport had to be pushed back off the stand at Heathrow when the airline decided it would not be leaving. BA also cancelled its daily Heathrow service to Tokyo's Narita airport.

BA said: "We are planning to operate our flights from Heathrow to Haneda and Narita on Saturday. We are working with our local airport teams in Tokyo to offer as much support as we can in a very difficult situation.

"We apologise to customers for the inconvenience and we will keep them informed of any changes to their flight plans. We will keep the situation under review for flights on Sunday and the early part of next week."

Virgin Atlantic, which operates daily services to Narita from Heathrow, also cancelled its Tokyo flight. A Virgin spokeswoman said: "Narita is about one hour from central Tokyo and we've cancelled our flight VS900 and the return flight VS901. We do have a flight from Tokyo that left before the earthquake and that will arrive back Friday evening."

Travel firm Kuoni said it had no customers in Japan at present but that the company was ascertaining the extent of the damage to the infrastructure.

Kuoni went on: "There appears to be no significant damage from the tsunami that has just passed through the Hawaiian Islands. The waves were reported to be between 3ft and 6ft and thankfully were not large enough to cause any major devastation. As a precautionary measure, our customers were moved to higher floors and our local agents have confirmed that our customers are being taken care of.

"Our local agents in South America confirm that every precaution is being taken to ensure our customers' safety. Based on the information we have received from our local agents, there is no major cause for concern but we will continue to monitor the situation until all warnings have ceased.

"The Kuoni operations team are closely monitoring the progress and updates for the tsunami along with our local ground agents for the areas that are at risk in the tsunami's path. If the situation were to change and it affects any customers' itinerary who are due to travel imminently, then the Kuoni operations team will be in contact immediately."
